On June 4, 2016, J R Fugett Middle School (FMS) held their Relay for HOPE event and raised over $14,400 for local families with cancer. Activities included walking the track, pieing  their teachers, participating in a homeroom vs. homeroom spirit competition, and listening to BHH’s family speaker, Colin Delaney, who inspired all with his story. The event was led by Fugett’s own Hope Squad, a group of dedicated students committed to spreading Unexpected Amazingness at FMS. Jimmy Schuffer, a student at FMS and a member of the Hope Squad, shares his thoughts on the experience,

“It feels good because I’m not raising money just to raise money. We are actually helping someone and making a difference.”

Arek Conners, who is also a student and a member of the Hope Squad, echoed Schuffer’s thoughts saying,

“It feels good. It feels like you achieved something. It feels good knowing you helped someone.”

These students could not have pulled this event off without the help of their teacher Kerry Montgomery who put in an extreme amount of work to make this an impactful experience for everyone involved.

Kerry tells Bringing Hope Home, “Fugett Middle School’s staff hosts a CHANGES COUNCIL twice a month in which teachers and administrators discuss ways to make Fugett a most wonderful school.  One thing that came out of the meeting was to host a school-wide event designed to promote comradery, philanthropy, and wellness.  FMS decided to continue its partnership with Bringing Hope Home as it’s such an amazing organization that helps local families. Relay for Hope was the culmination of weeks of fundraising promoted by the Students Bringing Hope “FMS Hope Squad”.  This team of students helped plan and promote fundraising, including a T-Shirt design contest for the event T-Shirt and the Pie a Teacher/Pie a Principal event!  The entire FMS community of students and staff came together in such a wonderful way.  We are thrilled to have raised over $14,000 for BHH, in addition to helping a few families over the holidays with the Adopt-A-Family program.”

At the end of the event, BHH and ACME Markets were proud to present Fugett Middle School with the 2015-2016 BHH School of the Year Award!
